Second Step - Empathy
Our elementary School has been focusing on the Empathy theme through the year through our Second Step and Class Meetings programs.
Our motto is “Empathy is compassion in action”, and we focus on helping our children develop skills in recognizing what others are feeling, putting themselves in their shoes, and responding appropriately.
This Quarter, we selected the Empathy theme for more in-depth activities and our Quarterly Assembly. In preparation, we invited ASA alumnae to give brief presentations to our ES students.
These presentations focused on their experiences in feeling empathy and doing community service in their years as ASA students, how these experiences shaped their grown up choices, what kinds of services they are providing now and what lessons they have learned about Empathy.
So far, three presenters joined us: Paula Burt, from Avina, discussed projects related to water conservation and access. Lucia Callizo, from Conin, shared her experiences in supporting malnourished children, and Andrea Burt talked about the many projects she was involved in her life, leading up to working at Sonidos de mi Tierra. We are extremely pleased with the feedback we have gotten from our students and from the community.
Children are excited to learn about these options and to find ways to help out.
