Wednesday, July 17, 2024
Asunción, Paraguay - The American School of Asuncion (ASA) celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 in June. The graduates achieved impressive college and university placements across the globe, underscoring ASA’s commitment to academic excellence and global education.
Notable University Acceptances
ASA graduates secured admissions to some of the United States' most prestigious universities, as measured by the U.S. News and World Report national rankings. Bear in mind that the USA has approximately 4,000 universities, so any university ranked in the top 400 is in the top 10%, and any school ranked in the top 40 is in the top 1% of schools in the USA.
Acceptances included the University of Chicago, ranked 12th nationally; the University of California, Davis, ranked 28th nationally; New York University, ranked 35th nationally; Boston University and Purdue University, both ranked 43rd nationally (tied); along with many more top schools including but not limited to Texas A&M, Northeastern University, George Washington University, and Suffolk University. Other notable institutions included Bentley University, Hult University, and Lynn University.
A high number of ASA graduates were admitted to prestigious institutions in Europe and Asia. In Europe, the list includes great universities like King’s College London, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham International College, Universidad Europea de Madrid, IE University, Universidad de Navarra, Bocconi, Esade Ramon Llull University, and University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. In Asia, the list includes but is not limited to Rikkyo University and Sophia University.
Overall, ASA seniors earned hundreds of acceptances to 39 USA universities, 27 universities in Europe and Asia, and universities in Paraguay as well. These placements reflect the global perspective and high academic standards that define ASA’s educational experience.
High School Principal, Mark Tennant, said “The competitive nature of college applications has never been so tough. The accomplishments of the ASA class of 2024 are a testament to their hard work and determination…. I wish them all the best….Do us proud!”
Advanced Placement Exams and AP Scholar Awards
Many ASA students achieved scores of 3 or higher on their AP exams. This is important because a score of 3 or above can earn college credit at universities in the USA. This helps students accelerate their studies, and can save money when the college tuition bill comes!
In AP Biology, the average score increased by 0.77, with 75% of students scoring 3 or higher. On the AP English Language exam, 84% of students scored 3 or higher. Notably, in AP Calculus (Calc AB), the percentage of students scoring 3+ more than doubled compared with last year!!! The average ASA score on that test increased significantly by 1.51, with 55% of students achieving a score of 3 or higher.
Every fall, the AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams. In recent years, ASA students have received a total of 66 AP Scholar Awards - 29 students were honored with AP Scholar awards, 17 students received AP Scholar with Distinction, 12 students received AP Scholar with Honor, and 8 students earned AP International Diplomas.
Margaret Sanders Student Scholarship
The prestigious and highly competitive Margaret Sanders Student Scholarship is awarded to only eight students globally each year, and one of those eight was a member of the ASA Class of 2024 - Pablo Corzo! Recipients of the scholarship demonstrate character strengths such as persistence and motivation, resourcefulness, as well as acceptance of other cultures and points of view. Recipients of this scholarship also displayed a genuine interest in and sustained commitment to the welfare of others, as reflected through participation in school activities and community/civic involvement.
Congratulations to ASA Students!
Regarding all this overall success, ASA’s Director General, Dr. Ben Ploeger, highlighted: “With our Class of 2024, ASA graduates have done it again! Year after year ASA graduates achieve excellence and carry forward to excellent universities, colleges, and service opportunities. Further, we are heartened to see the improvement in our AP Calculus scores! We recognize the hard work of ASA students and staff, and look ahead to an even brighter future.”
